Tao Te Ching

The Science of Consciousness

Science is the pursuit and application of knowledge and understanding of the natural and social world following a systematic methodology based on evidence.

What if consciousness isn’t something your brain creates, but a fundamental force of the universe — like gravity?

For decades, mainstream science has operated under the assumption of physicalism — treating the human brain like a computer and consciousness as mere software generated by firing neurons.

They propose that consciousness is not a byproduct of biological hardware, but rather a fundamental building block of the universe, akin to gravity, mass, or spacetime. By comparing the brain to a radio receiver that interacts with an external signal rather than generating the broadcast itself, these researchers argue that our subjective experience is a gateway to a deeper, universal reality.

A Third State of Being

Buddhism teaches that Life never dies. What did the Buddha know that we are only finding out now.

Scientists have identified what they’re calling a “third state” between life and death, a strange biological territory where cells from a deceased organism don’t simply shut down. Instead, under the right conditions, they reorganize, adapt, and sometimes create entirely new forms of living systems.

When we think about death, we often imagine a clean ending. An organism exists, then it stops existing. But biology appears to be more complex than that. The individual organism may die, while some of its components still carry a kind of creative potential, capable of participating in new patterns of organization.

In one experiment, researchers took skin cells from a deceased frog embryo and placed them in a controlled environment. Rather than simply breaking down, the cells spontaneously assembled into tiny living structures called xenobots. These new entities could move, repair themselves, interact with their environment, and even reproduce in a way unlike traditional organisms, by gathering and organizing other cells into new forms.

Later, scientists discovered similar behavior in human lung cells. These cells formed what researchers called anthrobots, small living structures that could navigate their surroundings and even assist in repairing damaged nerve cells.

From these studies, perhaps life is less like a machine that either turns on or off, and more like a dynamic process of organization, relationship, and intelligence expressing itself through matter.

We can let this be a reminder that nature does not always operate according to the rigid categories we create and perceive in the world.

This discovery also becomes philosophically fascinating. If cells from something that has died can reorganize into something new, what does that say about our understanding of endings? Tao Te Ching

The ‘Tao Te Ching’, Chinese: 道德經; is a Chinese classic text and foundational work of Taoism traditionally credited to the sage Laozi though the text's authorship, date of composition and date of compilation are debated.

The Tao Te Ching had a profound influence on Chinese religious movements and on subsequent Chinese philosophers, who annotated, commended, and criticized the texts extensively.

Meditation

Meditation is a practice in which an individual train his or her attention and awareness, to achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state.

Neuroscientists scanned the brains of meditators and what they found changed everything we know about the mind.

For most of human history, meditation was considered a spiritual practice — valuable for inner peace and religious development but outside the domain of medicine and neuroscience. That changed dramatically in 2011 when a landmark Harvard study published in Psychiatry Research provided the first structural MRI evidence that meditation physically and measurably changes the architecture of the human brain.

Dr. Sara Lazar and her team found that participants in an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program showed significant increases in gray matter density in the hippocampus (learning and memory), the posterior cingulate cortex (mind-wandering and self-relevance), the temporo-parietal junction (empathy and compassion), and the cerebellum. Simultaneously, gray matter in the amygdala — the brain's threat-detection alarm system — measurably decreased, correlating directly with participants' reported reductions in stress.

This was not subjective. These were structural changes in brain tissue — visible on MRI scans after just 8 weeks of daily practice.

Additional research has demonstrated that consistent meditation practice lowers cortisol by up to 30%, increases BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor — the brain's growth hormone), elevates baseline serotonin and dopamine levels, reduces systemic inflammatory markers including IL-6 and CRP, and improves telomere length — a direct biological marker of cellular aging.

Science

Science – the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation, experimentation, and the testing of theories against the evidence obtained.

The idea that your mind is woven into the universe is no longer just spiritual talk. It is creeping into serious science. A growing number of researchers are returning to panpsychism, the idea that consciousness is not made by the brain alone but is a fundamental feature of reality itself, present in all matter. Once dismissed as mysticism, it is now drawing real scientific attention.

What revived it is quantum biology. Nature already uses quantum effects in photosynthesis and bird navigation, so why not in the brain? That is the core of a theory from physicist Roger Penrose and Stuart Hameroff, who proposed consciousness arises from quantum processes inside our neurons. Some physicists go further, arguing the quantum information behind consciousness is non-local, reaching back to the origin of the universe.

None of it is fully proven. But the wall between mind and cosmos is no longer as solid as science once insisted. And the simplest connection was always real. The atoms thinking these thoughts were forged inside stars. You are made of the universe, briefly arranged into something that can feel it.

Our Mind

Research has clearly demonstrated that the subconscious mind makes no distinction between constructive and destructive thought-impulses, and will drive our actions based on the material we used in nourishing it.

Karma
