Religion

There was a time when religion ruled the world. It is known as the Dark Ages. - Ruth Hurmence Green

Nothing can be more contrary to religion and the clergy than reason and common sense. - Voltaire

Philosophy is questions that may never be answered. Religion is answers that may never be questioned. – Unknown

Where knowledge ends, religion begins. - Benjamin Disraeli

That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence. - Christopher Hitchens

Of what benefit is it to say our prayers regularly, go to church, receive the sacraments, and maybe go to confessions too; ay, feast the priest, and give alms to the poor, and yet lie, swear, curse, be drunk, covetous, unclean, proud, revengeful, vain and idle at the same time? - William Penn

There is no religion without love, and people may talk as much as they like about their religion, but if it does not teach them to be good and kind, it is all a sham. - Anna Sewell

The easy confidence with which I know another man’s religion is folly teaches me to suspect that my own is also. - Mark Twain

The fact is that more people have been slaughtered in the name of religion than for any other single reason. That, my friends, that is true perversion. - Harvey Milk

Religion

Religion is divisive. It is one thing that the world does not need. We are all human beings. Yet, we kill each other over a belief, a faith, a religion. To me, this shows how evil religion is.
Image from the internet

The minute you get a religion, you stop thinking. Believe in one thing too much and you have no room for new ideas. - Ray Bradbury

It is possible that mankind is on the threshold of a golden age; but, if so, it will be necessary first to slay the dragon that guards the door, and this dragon is religion. - Bertrand Russell

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion. - Steven Weinberg

Mockery of religion is one of the most essential things… one of the beginnings of the human emancipation is the ability to laugh at authority, its indispensable. - Christopher Hitchens

The religion of one age is the literary entertainment of the next. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

People have a peculiar pleasure in making converts, that is, in causing others to enjoy what they enjoy, thus finding their own likeness represented and reflected back to them. - Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

To terrify children with the image of hell, to consider women an inferior creation – is that good for the world? - Christopher Hitchens

Religion

The more I study religions, the more I am convinced that man never worshipped anyone but himself. - Sir Richard F. Burton

Image from the internet

It is only by dispelling the clouds and phantoms of Religion, that we shall discover the sources of Truth, Reason and Morality, and the real motives that should incline us to Virtue. - Paul-Henri Holbach

Of all religions, the Christians should of course inspire the most tolerance, but until now Christians have been the most intolerant of all men. - Voltaire

People will tell us that without the consolations of religion they would be intolerably unhappy. So far as this is true, it is a coward's argument. Nobody but a coward would consciously choose to live in a fool's paradise. - Bertrand Russell

Personally, I would not give a fig for any man’s religion whose horse, cat and dog do not feel its benefits. Life in any form is our perpetual responsibility. - S. Parkes Cadman

The only consistent purpose of human religion was as a cover for the most bestial excesses of mass homicide, torment, and atrocity. - Mick Farren

The priests of the different religious sects ... dread the advance of science as witches do the approach of daylight, and scowl on the fatal harbinger announcing the subdivision of the duperies on which they live. - Thomas Jefferson

We establish no religion in this country. We command no worship. We mandate no belief, nor will we ever. Church and State are and must remain separate. - Ronald Reagan

Religion

Your religious beliefs are not sacred or immune to criticism. They are beliefs in your head based on where you were born, how you were raised, and who influenced you. Simply having religious beliefs does not make them true or obligate others to respect them. So please, for everyone’s sake: wake up and educate yourself. - Unknown
Image from the internet

Religion is based, I think, primarily and mainly upon fear. It is partly the terror of the unknown and partly, as I have said, the wish to feel that you have a kind of elder brother who will stand by you in all your troubles and disputes. Fear is the basis of the whole thing – fear of the mysterious, fear of defeat, fear of death.
Fear is the parent of cruelty, and therefore it is no wonder if cruelty and religion have gone hand-in-hand. It is because fear is at the basis of those two things.
In this world we can now begin a little to understand things, and a little to master them by the help of science, which has forced its way step by step against the Christian religion, against the churches, and against the opposition of all the old precepts.
Science can help us to get over this craven fear in which mankind has lived for so many generations. Science can teach us, and I think our own hearts can teach us, no longer to look around for imaginary supports, no longer to invent allies in the sky, but rather to look to our own efforts here below to make this world a fit place to live in, instead of the sort of place that the churches in all these centuries have made it. - Bertrand Russell

Religion

Religion doesn’t just cloud our minds. It asks us to deliberately deceive ourselves to replace reason with its opposite: Faith. And when men operate on faith, they can no longer be reasoned with, which makes them more dangerous than any sane man, good or evil. - Unknown
Image from the internet

A long and wicked life followed by five minutes of perfect grace gets you into Heaven. An equally long life of decent living and good works followed by one outburst of taking the name of the Lord in vain – then have a heart attack at that moment and be damned for eternity. Is that the system? - Robert Heinlein

Before you speak to me about your religion, first show it to me in how you treat other people; Before you tell me how much you love your God, show me how much you love all his children; Before you preach to me of your passion for your faith, teach me about it through your compassion for your neighbours. - Cory Booker

The beauty of religious mania is that it has the power to explain everything. Once God (or Satan) is accepted as the first cause of everything which happens in the mortal world, nothing is left to chance... logic can be happily tossed out the window. - Stephen King

Religion

We diminish this life by preferring the myth of an afterlife. We sacrifice honesty to the maintenance of a lie. Religion demands time, energy, and money, draining valuable resources from the improvement of this world. - Dan Barker
Image from the internet

It has not been the fashion to be scientific about religion, but it is necessary that we should be scientific; it is time that we examined ourselves as to our faith and tried to know what we believe and why, and on what we base our belief. - C. W. Leadbeater

It is hard for many people to give up the religion in which they were born; to admit that their fathers were utterly mistaken, and that the sacred records of their country are but collections of myths and fables. - Robert Green Ingersoll

“Sins” are indispensable to every society organized on an ecclesiastical basis; they are the only reliable weapons of power; the priest lives upon sins; it is necessary to him that there be “sinning. - Friedrich Nietzsche

Of all the animosities which have existed among mankind, those which are caused by a difference of sentiments in religion appear to be the most inveterate and distressing, and ought most to be deprecated. - George Washington

People who want to share their religious views with you almost never want you to share yours with them. - Dave Barry

The greatest tragedy in mankind’s entire history may be the hijacking of morality by religion. - Arthur C. Clarke

The inhabitants of the earth are of two sorts: those with brains, but no religion, and those with religion, but no brains. - Abu’l-‘ala’ Al-Ma’arri

Let us feed the hungry. House the homeless. End the wars. Give healthcare to the sick. Empower the weak. Stand up to the system and create a better world for all. Once we have accomplished this, then we can sit around and argue about religion. - Unknown

Religion

You don’t need religion to have morals. If you can’t determine right from wrong then you lack empathy, not religion. - Unknown
Image from the internet

Over the years my religion has changed and my spirituality has evolved. Religion and spirituality are very different, but people often confuse the two. Some things cannot be taught, but they can be awakened in the heart. Spirituality is recognizing the divine light that is within us all. It doesn't belong to any particular religion; it belongs to everyone. - Muhammad Ali

We keep on being told that religion, whatever its imperfections, at least instils morality. On every side, there is conclusive evidence that the contrary is the case and that faith causes people to be more mean, more selfish, and perhaps above all, more stupid. - Christopher Hitchens

One of the great tragedies of mankind is that morality has been hijacked by religion. So now people assume that religion and morality have a necessary connection. But the basis of morality is really very simple and doesn't require religion at all. - Arthur Clarke

When it comes to religion, we're not two sides of the same coin, and you don't get to put your unreason up on the same shelf with my reason. Your stuff has to go over there, on the shelf with Zeus and Thor and the Kraken, with the stuff that is not evidence-based, stuff that religious people never change their mind about, no matter what happens. - Bill Maher

Religion – If…

If the people were a little more ignorant, astrology would flourish – if a little more enlightened, religion would perish. - Robert Green Ingersoll
Image from the internet

If a religion is not universal, it cannot be eternal. A narrow religion, a sectarian religion, an exclusive religion can live only for a limited time and a limited purpose. - Sri Aurobindo

If religious instruction were not allowed until the child had attained the age of reason, we would be living in a quite different world. - Christopher Hitchens

If the leaders of our religion cannot maintain their vows in the face of temptation... then perhaps it is time to question whether or not the whole system is flawed. - Lorkan

If there is a true religion in the universe, it must include the truth of contact or be forever hollow. - Dan Simmons

If your religion requires that you hate someone, you need a new religion. - Unknown

If the fundamentals of religions are peace and love, then why are the religious fundamentalists such massive, intolerant, violent, bigoted pricks? - Pablo Paredes

Religion – The Irony

Religion is the organization of spirituality into something that became the hand maiden of conquerors. Nearly all religions were brought to people and imposed on people by conquerors, and used as the framework to control their minds. - John Henrik Clarke
Image from the internet

Man is a Religious Animal. He is the only Religious Animal. He is the only animal that has the True Religion—several of them. He is the only animal that loves his neighbour as himself and cuts his throat if his theology isn’t straight. - Mark Twain

You never see animals going through the absurd and often horrible fooleries of magic and religion. Only man behaves with such gratuitous folly. It is the price he has to pay for being intelligent but not, as yet, intelligent enough. - Aldous Huxley

Men never commit evil so fully and joyfully as when they do it for religious convictions. - Blaise Pascal

Men will wrangle for religion; write for it; fight for it; die for it; anything but – live for it. - Charles Caleb Colton

Good people can do good and bad people can do evil. But for good people to do evil – that takes religion. - Steven Weinberg

Is it not strange that mankind should so willingly battle for religion and so unwillingly live according to its precepts? - Georg Christoph Lichtenberg

Religion has actually convinced people that there’s an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever ’til the end of time! But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He’s all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can’t handle money! - George Carlin

Religion

[A cosmic religion] has no dogma other than teaching man that the Universe is rational and that his highest destiny is to ponder it and co-create with its laws.. - Albert Einstein
Image from the internet

Excessive concern with religion seems to me a last resort for people who have been exhausted by life. - Naguib Mahfouz

Anyone who can worship a trinity and insist that his religion is a monotheism can believe anything. - Robert Heinlein

My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble mind. - Albert Einstein

That religion may have served some necessary function for us in the past does not preclude the possibility that it is now the greatest impediment to our building a global civilization. - Sam Harris

Religious beliefs prepare a kind of landscape of images, an illusory milieu favourable to every hallucination and every delirium. - Michel Foucault

Religious bondage shackles and debilitates the mind and unfits it for every noble enterprise. - James Madison

Actions inspired by fear of future punishment or hope of future reward are entirely selfish and unworthy of religion. - James Platt

Religion

Isn’t it a remarkable coincidence. Almost everyone has the same religion as their parents? And it always just Happens to be the right religion. Religions run in families. If we’d been brought up in ancient Greece we would all be worshipping Zeus and Apollo. If we have been born Vikings we would be worshipping Wotan, and Thor. How does this come about? Through childhood indoctrination. - Richard Dawkins
Image from the internet

Since it is no longer permissible to disparage any single faith or creed, let us start disparaging all of them. To be clear: an ideology is a belief system with an inadequate basis in reality; a religion is a belief system with no basis in reality whatever. Religious belief is without reason and without dignity, and its record is near-universally dreadful. - Martin Amis

Most religions believe that by crying, "Lord, Lord!" often enough, they can contrive to enter the kingdom of heaven. A flock of trained parrots could just as readily cry the same thing, with just as little chance of success. - Grandier

I'm for decency – period. I'm for anything and everything that bodes love and consideration for my fellow man. But when lip service to some mysterious deity permits bestiality on Wednesday and absolution on Sunday – cash me out. - Frank Sinatra

Views On Religions

Does religion fill a much needed gap? It is often said that there is a God-shaped gap in the brain which needs to be filled: we have a psychological need for God – imaginary friend, father, big brother, confessor, confidant – and the need has to be satisfied whether God really exists or not. But could it be that God clutters up a gap that we'd be better off filling with something else? Science, perhaps? Art? Human friendship? Humanism? Love of this life in the real world, giving no credence to other lives beyond the grave? - Richard Dawkins
Image from the internet

I am fascinated by religion. (That's a completely different thing from believing in it!) It has had such an incalculably huge effect on human affairs. What is it? What does it represent? Why have we invented it? How does it keep going? What will become of it? I love to keep poking and prodding at it. - Douglas Adams

I have never been able to soothe myself with the sugary delusions of religion; for these things stand convicted of the utmost absurdity in light of modern scientific knowledge. - H. P. Lovecraft

I put no stock in religion. By the word religion I have seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination be called the will of God. I have seen too much religion in the eyes of too many murderers. Holiness is in right action, and courage on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves, and goodness. - Hospitaller

I say people who feel they must have a faith or religion in order to face life are showing a kind of cowardice, which in any other sphere would be considered contemptible. But when it is in the religious sphere it is thought admirable, and I cannot admire cowardice whatever sphere it is in. - Bertrand Russell

Religion

Consider the long history of the activities inspired by moral fervour: human sacrifices, persecutions of heretics, witch-hunts, pogroms leading up to wholesale extermination by poison gases... Are these abominations, and the ethical doctrines by which they are prompted, really evidence of an intelligent Creator? And can we really wish that the men who practised them should live for ever? The world in which we live can be understood as a result of muddle and accident; but if it is the outcome of a deliberate purpose, the purpose must have been that of a fiend. For my part, I find accident a less painful and more plausible hypothesis. - Bertrand Russell
Image from the internet

When a man has once brought himself to accept uncritically all the absurdities that religious doctrines put before him and even to overlook the contradictions between them, we need not be greatly surprised at the weakness of his intellect. - Sigmund Freud

While I respect the Judeo-Christian ethic, as well as the eastern philosophies and of course the teachings of Mohammed, I find that organized religion has corrupted those beliefs to justify countless atrocities throughout history. Were I to attend church, I'd be a hypocrite. - Stephen Hyde

How on earth can religious people believe in so much arbitrary, clearly invented balderdash? The acceptance of a creed, any creed, entitles the acceptor to membership in the sort of artificial extended family we call a congregation. It is a way to fight loneliness. Any time I see a person fleeing from reason and into religion, I think to myself, "There goes a person who simply cannot stand being so god damned lonely any more. - Kurt Vonnegut

Organized religion

There are times when I think religion has its use. Some people need help to deal with the daily demands of life, and religion helps them keep their sanity. Even if it means believing in something that is unprovable. But then, that thinking is also flawed. People could have been taught to be self-reliant. This will help them keep in touch with reality instead of being fatalistic, depending on some imaginary image.
Image from the internet

Organized religion has too often followed the road of other people's institutions. It has made adjustments, compromises, and surrenders to a materialistic civilization for the benefit of material security in spite of occasional twinges of conscience and moral protests. The result has been that today much of organized religion is materialistically solvent but spiritually bankrupt. - Saul Alinsky

It is your organized religions that have made it clear through their most sacred scriptures that cruelty and killing is an acceptable response to human frailty and human differences. This goes against every human instinct, but organized religion has reorganized human thoughts. Some humans have even been turned against their own instinct for survival. And so people go around maiming and killing each other, because they've been told quite directly that this is what God does to them – and what God wants them to do to each other. - Neale Donald Walsch

There are things about organized religion which I resent. Christ is revered as the Prince of Peace, but more blood has been shed in His name than any other figure in history. You show me one step forward in the name of religion and I'll show you a hundred retrogressions. Remember, they were men of God who destroyed the educational treasures at Alexandria, who perpetrated the Inquisition in Spain, who burned the witches at Salem. Over 25,000 organized religions flourish on this planet, but the followers of each think all the others are miserably misguided and probably evil as well. - Frank Sinatra

Most organized religions are control systems to mentally and spiritually enslave humans and deprive them of freewill. - Montalk

If I were to suggest that between the Earth and Mars there is a china teapot revolving about the sun in an elliptical orbit, nobody would be able to disprove my assertion provided I were careful to add that the teapot is too small to be revealed even by our most powerful telescopes. But if I were to go on to say that, since my assertion cannot be disproved, it is intolerable presumption on the part of human reason to doubt it, I should rightly be thought to be talking nonsense. If, however, the existence of such a teapot were affirmed in ancient books, taught as the sacred truth every Sunday, and instilled into the minds of children at school, hesitation to believe in its existence would become a mark of eccentricity and entitle the doubter to the attentions of the psychiatrist in an enlightened age or of the Inquisitor in an earlier time. - Bertrand Russell

No religion I ever encountered made any sense. None are consistent. Most gods are megalomaniacs and paranoid psychotics by their worshippers' description. I don't see how they could survive their own insanity. But it's not impossible that human beings are incapable of interpreting a power so much greater than themselves. Maybe religions are twisted and perverted shadows of truth. Maybe there are forces which shape the world. I myself have never understood why, in a universe so vast, a god would care about something so trivial as worship or human destiny. - Glen Cook

I have no religion, and at times I wish all religions at the bottom of the sea. He is a weak ruler who needs religion to uphold his government; it is as if he would catch his people in a trap. My people are going to learn the principles of democracy, the dictates of truth and the teachings of science. Superstition must go. Let them worship as they will; every man can follow his own conscience, provided it does not interfere with sane reason or bid him against the liberty of his fellow-men. - Mustafa Kemal Ataturk

Religion

I am not a fan of religions. Religion is divisive. It is one thing that the world does not need. I am quite sure religion was created to control the people.

The whole religion thing is so potently infantile, so foreign to reality, that to anyone with a friendly attitude to humanity it is painful to think that the great majority of mortals will never be able to rise above this view of life. - Sigmund Freud

All dogmatic religions are false and should not be accepted by self-respecting persons as final. - Hypatia

The argument of the importance of religion in contributing to individual happiness is very much exaggerated. Whether you are happy or unhappy depends upon a number of factors. Most people need good health and enough to eat. They need not only physical health but mental health. Given all these things, most people will be happy whatever their theology. Without them, most people will be unhappy, whatever their theology. - Bertrand Russell

As long as there are those who are willing to shed blood and take innocent life in the name of religion – in the name of God – the world will never know a true and lasting peace. - Hillary Clinton

Isn’t it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too? - Douglas Adams
