Atheism Is Not A Religion

Image created on Canva

Atheism has no creeds, rituals, holy book, absolute moral code, origin myth, sacred spaces or shrines. It has no sin, divine judgement, forbidden words, prayer, worship, prophecy, group privileges, or anointed ‘holy’ leaders. Atheists don’t believe in a transcendent world or supernatural afterlife. Most important, there is no orthodoxy in atheism. - Dan Baker

An Atheist believes that he can get no help through prayer but that he must find in himself the inner conviction, and strength to meet life, to grapple with it, to subdue it, and enjoy it. An Atheist believes that only in a knowledge of himself and a knowledge of his fellow man can he find the understanding that will help to a life of fulfilment. He seeks to know himself and his fellow man rather than to know a god. An Atheist believes that a hospital should be built instead of a church. An Atheist believes that deed must be done instead of a prayer said. An Atheist strives for involvement in life and not escape into death. He wants disease conquered, poverty vanished, war eliminated. - Madalyn Murray O’Hair

Atheists are often charded with blasphemy, but it is a crime they cannot commit. When the Atheist examines, denounces, or satirizes the gods, he is not dealing with persons but with ideas. He is incapable of insulting God, for he does not admit the existence of any such being. - G. W. Foote

Spirituality

Determined that there is more to life than what I was experiencing, I embarked on my spiritual journey. So far, what I have read, and experienced made sense to me. It convinced me that I am on the right path.

The spiritual journey is a very personal thing. As such, it can be a lonely one for those starting out. However, after a while, when you have gained awareness and understanding, you will find not find it lonely anymore. You will find peace and enjoy the alone time. Life will not be so much of a mystery any more. Life will still be ‘hard’ and complicated, but you learn to take it in your stride.

I have never been spiritual in the sense that you understand the word. That has not been my way at all. But to me spirituality has a totally different connotation. It needs an honest individuality. It does not allow any kind of dependence. It creates a freedom for itself, whatever the cost. It is never in the crowd but alone, because the crowd has never found any truth. The truth has been found only in people's aloneness. - Osho

For me, spirituality includes the belief in things larger than ourselves, an appreciation of nature and beauty, a sensitivity to the world, a feeling of shared connection with other living things, a desire to help people less fortunate than ourselves. All of these things can occur with or without God. I do not believe in the existence of God, but I consider myself a spiritual person in the manner I have just described. I call myself a spiritual atheist. I would imagine that many people are spiritual atheists. - Alan Lightman

Spirituality does not require that you work hard toward achieving a result in the future as much as it requires you to be fully “present, sincere and committed now, with absolute honesty and willingness to uncover and let go of any illusions that come between you and the realization of Reality. - Adyashanti

Zen

Image from the internet

No matter what verbal space you try to enclose Zen in, it resists, and spills over... the Zen attitude is that words and truth are incompatible, or at least that no words can capture truth. - Douglas Hofstadter

Zen lives in the present. The Whole teaching is: how to be in the present; how to get out of the past which is no more and how not to get involved in the future which is not yet, and just to be rooted, centered, in that which is. - Osho

Let the world call you lazy for not running about like a frightened ghost. Just be quiet inside yourself. Don't bother about knowing how things should be and simply begin observing without prejudice, projections or desires. Notice how life flows of its own accord. Nothing here is a chaos, but a harmony. You are already inside this flow. - Mooji

Universe

Image from the internet

It doesn't seem to me that this fantastically marvellous universe, this tremendous range of time and space and different kinds of animals, and all the different planets, and all these atoms with all their motions, and so on, all this complicated thing can merely be a stage so that God can watch human beings struggle for good and evil – which is the view that religion has. The stage is too big for the drama. - Richard Feyman

I like to experience the Universe as one harmonious whole. Every cell has life. Matter, too, has life; it is energy solidified. The tree outside is life… The whole of nature is life… The basic laws of the universe are simple, but because our senses are limited, we can’t grasp them. There is a pattern in creation. - Albert Einstein

Instead of being overwhelmed by the universe, I think that perhaps one of the deepest experiences a scientist can have, almost approaching a religious awakening, is to realize that we are children of the stars, and that our minds are capable of understanding the universal laws that they obey. The atoms within our bodies were forged on the anvil of nucleo-synthesis within an exploding star aeons before the birth of the solar system. Our atoms are older than the mountains. We are literally made of star dust. Now these atoms, in turn, have coalesced into intelligent beings capable of understanding the universal laws governing that event. - Michiokaku

Truth

Image from the internet

When wisdom awakens within you, you will see Truth wherever you look. Truth is all there is. It's like when you've learned how to read – you can then read anywhere you go. - Ajahn Chah

Language is limited. It cannot be used to express colour to the blind nor sound to the deaf and cannot be used to express truth. Truth, being above the limitations of language, can only be expressed symbolically or by analogy, and the comprehension of truth so expressed is relative to the understanding of the recipient. - Henry N. Gerguson

A king asked a sage to explain the Truth. In response the sage asked the king how he would convey the taste of a mango to someone who had never eaten anything sweet. No matter how hard the king tried, he could not adequately describe the flavour of the fruit, and, in frustration, he demanded of the sage "Tell me then, how would you describe it?" The sage picked up a mango and handed it to the king saying "This is very sweet. Try eating it!"
