Mindfulness

Image from the internet

Mindfulness is simply being aware of what is happening right now without wishing it were different; enjoying the pleasant without holding on when it changes (which it will): being with the unpleasant without fearing it will always be this way (Which it won’t). - James Baraz

Mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience. It isn’t more complicated than that. Practice Mindfulness. - Sylvia Boorstein

Mindfulness is the quality and power of mind that is aware of what’s happening – without judgement and without interference. It is like a mirror that simply reflects whatever comes before it. - Unknown

Compassion

Image from the internet

Great compassion is the root of all spiritual paths, and of all Superior beings. - Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

Compassion is the signature of Higher Consciousness. Non-violence is the tool to evolve into the Higher Consciousness. - Amit Ray

In the beginning, compassion is like the seed without which we cannot have any fruit; in the middle, compassion is like water to nourish the seed we have planted; in the end, compassion is like the warmth of the sun that brings the fruit to ripening. - Buddha

Compassion is an aspiration, a state of mind, wanting others to be free from suffering. It’s not passive – it’s not empathy alone – but rather an empathetic altruism that actively strives to free others from suffering. Genuine compassion must have both wisdom and loving kindness. That is to say, one must understand the nature of the suffering from which we wish to free others (this is wisdom), and one must experience deep intimacy and empathy with other sentient beings (this is loving kindness). - The Dalai Lama (Essence of the Heart Sutra)

Compassion, in which all ethics must take root, can only attain its full breadth and depth if it embraces all living creatures and does not limit itself to mankind. - Albert Schweitzer

Buddhism

I embrace Buddhism as a philosophy, as a Way of Life. I do not care for it as a religion as I do not believe in religion. Religion is divisive. It is the cause of much pain to humanity. I believe the world would be a better place without religion.

Anyway, Buddhism is not a religion, or, it didn’t start out to be a religion in the first place. The Teachings of Gautama Buddha is a Philosophy of Life, or Life Philosophy, or Way of Life – however you want to put it. It teaches us about Life, and how to live our lives rightly.

First of all, Buddhism is neither pessimistic nor optimistic. If anything at all, it is realistic, for it takes a realistic view of life and the world. It looks at things objectively. It does not falsely lull you into living in a fool's paradise, nor does it frighten and agonize you with all kinds of imaginary fears and sins. It tells you exactly and objectively what you are and what the world around you is, and shows you the way to perfect freedom, peace, tranquillity and happiness. - Walpola Rahula

Acceptance, in the Buddhist sense of the word, is not passivity. It is not accepting what happens without an active response, merely shrugging one's shoulders and declining to engage. Rather, it is looking clearly and calmly at a situation, seeing it for what it is and working with it as it is. - Gary Hayden

To study Buddhism is to study the self. To study the self is to forget the self. To forget the self is to be awakened by all things. - Dogen

Buddhist practice starts with having faith in the cause and effect as depicted by the law of Depenendent Origination! Whereas ‘effect’ could be see by others, it’s ‘cause’ might only be know mostly by oneself. - Master Venerable Hai Tao

Our life is shaped by our mind; we become what we think. Joy follows a pure thought like a shadow that never leaves. And suffering follows an evil thought as the wheels of a cart follow the oxen that draws it.

Views On Religion

There are times when I think religion has its use. Some people need help to deal with the daily demands of life. It helps them keep their sanity. Even if it means believing in something that is unprovable. But then, that thinking is also flawed. People should be taught to be self-reliant. This will help them be in touch with reality instead of being fatalistic, depending on a make-believe entity.
Image from the internet

If I were to suggest that between the Earth and Mars there is a china teapot revolving about the sun in an elliptical orbit, nobody would be able to disprove my assertion provided I were careful to add that the teapot is too small to be revealed even by our most powerful telescopes. But if I were to go on to say that, since my assertion cannot be disproved, it is intolerable presumption on the part of human reason to doubt it, I should rightly be thought to be talking nonsense. If, however, the existence of such a teapot were affirmed in ancient books, taught as the sacred truth every Sunday, and instilled into the minds of children at school, hesitation to believe in its existence would become a mark of eccentricity and entitle the doubter to the attentions of the psychiatrist in an enlightened age or of the Inquisitor in an earlier time. - Bertrand Russell

No religion I ever encountered made any sense. None are consistent. Most gods are megalomaniacs and paranoid psychotics by their worshippers' description. I don't see how they could survive their own insanity. But it's not impossible that human beings are incapable of interpreting a power so much greater than themselves. Maybe religions are twisted and perverted shadows of truth. Maybe there are forces which shape the world. I myself have never understood why, in a universe so vast, a god would care about something so trivial as worship or human destiny. - Glen Cook

I have no religion, and at times I wish all religions at the bottom of the sea. He is a weak ruler who needs religion to uphold his government; it is as if he would catch his people in a trap. My people are going to learn the principles of democracy, the dictates of truth and the teachings of science. Superstition must go. Let them worship as they will; every man can follow his own conscience, provided it does not interfere with sane reason or bid him against the liberty of his fellow-men. - Mustafa Kemal Ataturk

Faith

Image from the internet

Having faith that something is true does not make it true.
Having faith does not make it probably true.
Having faith has no bearing on truth whatsoever.
Having faith simple means you will believe it whether it is true or not. - Unknown

The doubt of your faith is not your god testing you. It is your rationality trying to emerge and free you. - Unknown

People always demand respect for their faith. You’ve noticed this happening. Why should I respect someone who makes enormous claims on no evidence, and when confronted with that fact, says, “Well, I don’t need any evidence, I’ve got faith’. I think that extraordinary claims, such as that they know, not just that there is a god, but that they know his mind, they know his instructions, they’ve had revealed truth from him: a claim like that demands extraordinary evidence. Instead of which, they say, ‘No, how about no evidence at all, and just take me on faith?’ Why am I supposed to respect that? I don’t respect it. I suspect it. - Unknown

Prayers

I cringe whenever I hear someone says, “I pray....”

Sure, you can pray all you want. But I am sure that is not how things work.

Image from the internet

The man who prays is the one who thinks that God has arranged matters all wrong, but who also thinks that he can instruct God how to put them right. Half-buried in the contradiction is the distressing idea that nobody is in charge, or nobody with any moral authority. The call to prayer is self-cancelling. - Christopher Hitchens

The creator who could put a cancer in a believer's stomach is above being interfered with by prayers. - Bret Harte

Why do you waste time praying? The answer is to make yourself feel better by pretending you did something when you did nothing. Praying works exactly the same as ‘making a wish’ does for kids. Sometimes life brings you what you want and sometimes it doesn’t. Why would you not trust your magic God to already know what to do to ‘heal the land’ or cure someone’s cancer, or make it sunny for your barbeque on Sunday? Will you change God’s mind away from his Divine plan? - Unknown
