The Way of Zen

Being Zen about something means just being as it is. Seeing clearly, hearing clearly, smelling clearly, tasting clearly, touching clearly – that’s Zen. So everything as it is, is truth. But when we add thinking, we don’t see truth as it is. We see something that we like, or we don’t like; we want or don’t want, we accept or don’t accept. That’s not Zen. - Venerable Hyon Gak

The Way of Zen

Do one thing at a time.
Do thing slowly and mindfully.
Connect deeply with people and nature.
Meditate frequently.
Appreciated silence.
Expect nothing.
Be grateful for everything.
Observe without judement.
Consume less, create more.
Let go of fears and desires.
Listen to understand, not to respond.
Be patient and generous.
Love deeply.
Live simply.

Zen means to return to this moment. Hear the bird, hear the rain, feel the air-conditioning sitting here. That’s Zen. From that point I can function clearly, openly. - Venerable Hyon Gak

Laozi - Lao Tzu

Laozi, also romanized as Lao Tzu was a Chinese philosopher and author of the Tao Te Ching, one of the foundational texts of Taoism. The name, literally meaning 'Old Master', was likely intended to portray an archaic anonymity. A central figure in Chinese culture, Laozi is generally considered the founder of Taoism.

Empty yourself of everything. Let the mind become still. The ten thousand things rise and fall while the Self watches their return. They grow and flourish and then return to the Source. Returning to the Source is stillness, which is the way of nature. - Lao Tzu

Be still. Stillness reveals the secrets of eternity. - Lao Tzu

Returning is the motion of the Tao. Each separate being returns to the common Source. Returning to the Source is serenity. - Lao Tsu

Never stop leaving and you will arrive. Stop searching and you will see. Stop running away and you will be found. - Lao Tzu

Worlds and particles, bodies and beings, time and space: All are transient expressions of the Tao. - Lao Tzu

At the centre of your being you have the answer; you know who you are and you know what you want. - Lao Tzu

Don't think you can attain total awareness and whole enlightenment without proper discipline and practice. This is egomania. Appropriate rituals channel your emotions and life energy toward the light. Without the discipline to practice them, you will tumble constantly backward into darkness. - Lao Tzu

Understanding Energy

Chi, or Qi is the Chinese term for Life Energy, a vital force that flows through all living things. In western terms, it is call Universal Life Force or Vital Life Force.

It is this Life Force Energy that gives Life to humans, animals, reptiles, plants – anything that is alive on this planet. Without this Vital Life Force coursing through us, we will be dead. All living things will be dead things.

The key to getting the very best out of life lies in understanding and working with this energy.

Image from the internet

Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it. Match the frequency of the reality you want and you cannot help but get that reality. It can be no other way. This is not philosophy. This is physics. - Albert Einstein

Everything is in motion. Everything flows. Everything is vibrating. - Wayne Dyer

Every change of condition in matter is brought about by the action of energy on it. - Dolbear

If real is what you can feel, smell, taste and see, then ‘real’ is simply electrical signals interpreted by your brain. - Morpheus

Every single person has within an ocean of pure vibrant consciousness. Every single human being can experience that – infinite intelligence, infinite creativity, infinite happiness, infinite energy, infinite dynamic peace. - David Lynch

All works are being done by the energy and power of nature, but due to delusion of ego people assume themselves to be the doer. - Krishna

There are many ways to calm a negative energy without suppressing or fighting it. You recognize it, you smile to it, and you invite something nicer to come up and replace it; you read some inspiring words, you listen to a piece of beautiful music, you go somewhere in nature, or you do some walking meditation. - Thich Nhat Hanh

Stephen Hawking on the Universe

So long as the universe had a beginning, we could suppose it had a creator. But if the universe is really completely self-contained, having no boundary or edge, it would have neither beginning nor end: it would simply be. What place, then, for a creator? - Stephen Hawking
Image from the internet

Look up at the stars and not down at your feet. Try to make sense of what you see, and wonder about what makes the universe exist. Be curious. - Stephen Hawking

We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special. - Stephen Hawking

There ought to be something very special about the boundary conditions of the universe and what can be more special than that there is no boundary? - Stephen Hawking

A lot of prizes have been awarded for showing the universe is not as simple as we might have thought. - Stephen W. Hawking

If we do discover a complete theory, it should in time be understandable in broad principle by everyone, not just a few scientists. Then we shall all, philosophers, scientists, and just ordinary people, be able to take part in the discussion of the question of why it is that we and the universe exist. If we find the answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason. - Stephen Hawking

Science

Science – the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation, experimentation, and the testing of theories against the evidence obtained.
Image from the internet

There must be no barriers for freedom of inquiry. There is no place for dogma in science. The scientist is free, and must be free to ask any question, to doubt any assertion, to seek for any evidence, to correct any errors. - J. Robert Oppenheimer

The day science begins to study non-physical phenomena, it will make more progress in one decade than in all the previous centuries of its existence. If you want to find the secrets of the iniverse, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration. - Nikola Tesla

Science is the great antidote to the poison of enthusiasm and superstition. - Adam Smith

Science is the only religion of mankind. - Arthur C. Clarke

The good thing about science is that it’s true whether or not you believe in it. - Neil Degrasse Tyson

Meditation

Man needs silence, and an opportunity to meditate. One may even need to isolate himself temporarily from outside interference to be able to think through and assimilate his experiences, to attain understanding and insight into them. By watching for the illuminating gleam of intuition, listening for the whisper of the inner self, one can find new answers to his problems, new directions for his life, new ways to fulfil his dreams.

The gift of learning to meditate is the greatest gift you can give yourself in this lifetime. - Sogyal Rinpoche

Enjoy simple things with total intensity. Just a cup of tea can be a deep meditation. - Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh

For 15 minutes, simply sit silently and think that the whole world is a dream…. And that there is nothing of any significance in it. - Osho

Through observation and instruction, reading and conversation may furnish us with many ideas of men and things, yet it is our own meditation and the labour of our own thoughts that must form our judgment of things. - Isaac Watts

Thus meditating you will no longer strive to build yourself up in your prejudices, but, forgetting self, you will remember only that you are seeking the Truth. - James Allen

What we have to learn, in both meditation and in life, is to be free of attachment to the good experiences, and free of aversion to the negative ones. - Sogyal Rinpoche

When we mediate we sow ourselves down into stillness and silence so we can finally hear the whispers deep within our heart. - Davidji

You have to learn meditation to enjoy your emptiness. - Unknown

Truth

What is true is true. We cannot change the truth, no matter how much we dislike it. Truth never changes. The truth will come out, it always does. Truth only reveals itself when one gives up all preconceived ideas.
Image from the internet

The excellence and inspiration of truth is in the pursuit, not in the mere having of it. The pursuit of all truth is a kind of gymnastics; a man swings from one truth with higher strength to gain another. The continual glory is the possibility opening before us. - E. H. Chapin

The masses have never thirsted after truth. They turn aside from evidence that is not to their taste, preferring to deify error, if error seduce them. Whoever can supply them with illusions is easily their master; whoever attempts to destroy their illusions is always their victim. - Gustave le Bon

It is only those who are in constant revolt that discover what is true, not the man who conforms, who follows some tradition. It is only when you are constantly inquiring, constantly observing, constantly learning, that you find truth. - Jiddu Krishnamurti

The truth may be puzzling. It may be counter intuitive. It may contradict deeply held prejudices. It may not be consistent with what we desperately want to be true. But our preferences do not determine what’s true. - Carl Sagan

Cultivation of The Mind

Cultivation to the mind is as necessary as food to the body. Keep your mind humble, and open to new ideas. You will learn much more in the process, and continue to develop as a human being. - Unknown
Image from the internet

The supreme of all efforts is to subdue one’s mind. Be constantly aware of one’s mind because our mind is very unstable. Our mind is very gross and rough. When we are able to pacify and remove the delusions from our minds, our minds will become very flexible and peaceful. - Unknown

A mind, like a home, is furnished by its owner, so if one’s life is cold and bare he can blame none but himself. - Louis L 'Amour

The world is in a very feverish state. The mind changes from like to dislike with the feverishness of the world. If we can learn to make the mind still, it will be the greatest help to the world. - Unknown

The mind of man is like an unbroken horse that would go anywhere except where you wanted it to. - Unknown

When your mind is narrow, small things agitate you easily. Make your mind an ocean. - Lama Thebtan Yeshe

The treacherous, unexplored areas of the world are not in continents or seas; they are in the minds and hearts of men. - Unknown

This mind of ours, like the earth beneath our feet, teems with exhaustless riches. The conditions of development only are needed. - Christian Nestell Bovee

Your own mind is a sacred enclosure into which nothing harmful can enter except by your permission. - Arnold Bennett

Compassion

Compassion for others begins with kindness to ourselves. If your compassion does not include yourself, it is incomplete.
Only when we know our own darkness well can we be present with the darkness of others. Compassion becomes real when we recognize our shared humanity. - Pema Chodran

Pain must enter into its glorified life of memory before it can turn into compassion. - George Eliot

Compassion alone stands apart from the continuous traffic between good and evil within us. Compassion is the antitoxin of the soul: where there is compassion even the most poisonous impulses remain relatively harmless. - Eric Hoffer

Love and compassion are the mother and father of a smile. We need to create more smiles in our world today. Smiles, after all, pave the way to a happy world. - Steve Maraboli

What I've come to learn is that the world is never saved in grand messianic gestures, but in the simple accumulation of gentle, soft, almost invisible acts of compassion. - Chris Abani

Detachment

Detachment is not that you should own nothing, but that nothing should own you.

Detachment is one of the most important factors for the attainment of Enlightenment. The attainment of enlightenment is by way of non-attachment. Most of life's troubles are caused by attachment. We get angry; we worry; we become greedy and complain bitterly. All these causes of unhappiness, tension, stubbornness, and sadness are due to attachment. When we investigate any trouble or worry we have, the main cause is always attachment. Thus a person should maintain an attitude of detachment from worldly pleasures rather than being selfishly attached to them.

Image from the internet

There is no fire like greed, no crime like hatred, no sorrow like separation, no sickness like hunger of the heart, and no joy like the joy of freedom. Health, contentment and trust are your greatest possessions, and freedom your greatest joy. Look within, be still. Free from fear and attachment, know the sweet joy of living in the way. - The Buddha

Those who find delight in freedom from attachment in the renunciation of clinging, free from the inflow of thoughts, they are like shining lights, having reached final liberation in the world. - The Buddha

Views On Religions

Does religion fill a much needed gap? It is often said that there is a God-shaped gap in the brain which needs to be filled: we have a psychological need for God – imaginary friend, father, big brother, confessor, confidant – and the need has to be satisfied whether God really exists or not. But could it be that God clutters up a gap that we'd be better off filling with something else? Science, perhaps? Art? Human friendship? Humanism? Love of this life in the real world, giving no credence to other lives beyond the grave? - Richard Dawkins
Image from the internet

I am fascinated by religion. (That's a completely different thing from believing in it!) It has had such an incalculably huge effect on human affairs. What is it? What does it represent? Why have we invented it? How does it keep going? What will become of it? I love to keep poking and prodding at it. - Douglas Adams

I have never been able to soothe myself with the sugary delusions of religion; for these things stand convicted of the utmost absurdity in light of modern scientific knowledge. - H. P. Lovecraft

I put no stock in religion. By the word religion I have seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination be called the will of God. I have seen too much religion in the eyes of too many murderers. Holiness is in right action, and courage on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves, and goodness. - Hospitaller

I say people who feel they must have a faith or religion in order to face life are showing a kind of cowardice, which in any other sphere would be considered contemptible. But when it is in the religious sphere it is thought admirable, and I cannot admire cowardice whatever sphere it is in. - Bertrand Russell
