How God Came Into Existence

God is an invention – a word dreamed up to explain the world.
Image from the internet

Ignorance of nature's ways led people in ancient times to invent gods to lord it over every aspect of human life. There were gods of love and war; of the sun, earth, and sky; of the oceans and rivers; of rain and thunderstorms; even of earthquakes and volcanoes. When the gods were pleased, mankind was treated to good weather, peace, and freedom from natural disaster and disease. When they were displeased, there came draught, war, pestilence, and epidemics. Since the connection of cause and effect in nature was invisible to their eyes, these gods appeared inscrutable, and people at their mercy. - Stephen Hawking & Leonard Mlodinow

God was always invented to explain mystery. God is always invented to explain those things that you do not understand. Now when you finally discover how something works, you get some laws which you're taking away from God; you don't need him any more. But you need him for the other mysteries. So therefore you leave him to create the universe because we haven't figured that out yet; you need him for understanding those things which you don't believe the laws will explain, such as consciousness, or why you only live to a certain length of time – life and death – stuff like that. God is always associated with those things that you do not understand. - Richard Feynman

In the face of nature's overwhelming forces, humans needed a God who would protect them from harm. When they felt that they had broken the law or committed wrongdoing, people turned to a God who would judge them on the one hand and redeem their sins on the other. In this way, purely from self-interest, the project of creating God in our own image proceeded – and continues to proceed. - Deepak Chopra

Churches

Image from the internet

There would be no churches if humanity had not been afraid of the weather, the dark, the plague, the eclipse and all manner of other things now easily explicable. - Christopher Hitchens

All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian, or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit. - Thomas Paine

Civilization will not attain to its perfection until the last stone from the last church falls on the last priest. - Emile Zola

Where God hath a temple, the devil will have a chapel. - Robert Burton

The nearer the Church the further from God. - Lancelot Andrews

Christianity

Image from the internet

Christianity: The popular belief that a celestial Jewish baby who is also his own father, born from a virgin mother, died for three days so that he could ascend to heaven on a cloud and then make you live forever only if you symbolically eat his flesh, drink his blood and telepathically tell him you accept him as your lord and master so he can remove an evil force from your spiritual being that is present in all humanity because an immoral woman made from a man’s rib was hoodwinked by a talking reptile possessed by a malicious angel to secretly eat forbidden fruit from a magical tree. Sounds perfectly plausible… - Unknown

If you are a Christian because you believe ‘two billion people can’t be wrong’ about Jesus, what about the five billion who think he doesn’t exists. - Unknown

So, the billions of people who existed before ‘Your Jesus’ are burning in hell for being born too early in history? - Unknown

Christianity did not become a major religion by the quality of its truth, but by the quantity of its violence. - Michael Sherlock

The Bible

I wonder how many people read the entire Bible. And can one seriously believe in the Bible after having read it thoroughly? I think anyone with common sense would, having read the bible, cast the book aside and never believe a word it said.

Nobody in the Bible had a Bible. - Unknown

The Bible. That is what fools have written, what imbeciles command, what rogues teach, and young chilfren are made to learn by heart. - Voltaire

Can any rational person believe that the Bible is anything but a human document? We now know pretty well where the various books cam from, and about when they were written. We know that they were written by human beings who had no knowledge of life, and were influenced by the barbarous morality of primitive times, and were grossly ignorant of most things that men know today. - Clarence Darrow.

Spiritual Teachers

It is not easy to find a genuine teacher to guide you on your spiritual path. But it is said that when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. Until then, we should depend on ourselves. However, we might not actually need a teacher because teachers are already everywhere. All we need is to be more observant, to pay more attention and be aware of what’s happening around us.

The Buddha himself didn’t have a teacher. He gained enlightenment on his own. If we persevere, and believe in ourselves, we can and will surely gain enlightenment too. Besides, we already have the Teachings of the Buddhas and the sages to guide us. Let them be our guides, our teachers.

Image from the internet

Like the Buddha.. we should look around us and be observant because everything in the world is ready to teach us. With even a little intuitive wisdom, we will then be able to see clearly through the ways of the world. We will come to understand that everything in the world is a teacher. Trees and vines, for example, can all reveal the true nature of reality. With wisdom there is no need to question anyone, no need to study. We can learn from nature enough to be enlightened... because everything follows the way of truth. It does not diverge from truth. - Ajahn Chah

You are your own teacher. Looking for teachers can't solve your own doubts. Investigate yourself to find the truth – inside, not outside. Knowing yourself is most important. - Ajahn Chah

Wherever you go you will find your teacher, as long as you have the eyes to see and the ears to hear. - Shunryu Suzuki

Beliefs

Your beliefs – they are just that. They are nothing, they are just how you were taught, and raised. That doesn’t make them real. You have a right to your beliefs, but that does not mean your beliefs are right. You shouldn’t believe everything you were told, and you shouldn’t believe everything you hear. Don’t believe hastily.
Image from the internet

If there were proof that a god exists, you wouldn’t BELIEVE it – you would have KNOWLEDGE of it. You would not need FAITH. Because you would have FACTS. These facts could then be proven to anyone else. They could be repeated, tested and demonstrated. What you HAVE is FICTION you WANT to believe. That’s it. - Unknown

A wise man... proportions his belief to the evidence. - David Hume

Every man prefers belief to the exercise of judgment. - Seneca

Nothing is so firmly believed as that which we least know. - Michel de Montaigne

Never underestimate the power of the human mind to believe what it wants to believe, no matter the conflicting evidence. - Brian Herbert & Kevin J. Anderson

Spiritual Awakening

Image from the internet

Spiritual awakening is the most essential thing in man's life, and it is the sole purpose of being. Is not civilization, in all its tragic forms, a supreme motive for spiritual awakening? - Kahlil Gibran

Awakening is not to know what this reality is. Awakening is to know what reality is not. It is to cease identifying oneself with any object of knowledge whatsoever. - Alan Watts

When you awaken… It’s not about seeing different things in life. It’s about seeing the things in your life differently. - Rhonda Hendricks

The awakening does not come to you. You find it in you. - Rumi

The only way you will ever awaken is through silence, not through analysation of facts. Not by sorting out good and bad, but through simple silence, letting go. Letting go of all thoughts, all the hurts, all the dogmas and concepts. Letting go of these things daily. - Robert Adam

Spirituality

The spiritual jouney can be a lonely one, for those who are starting out. Firstly you will have doubts on whether you are right to pursue this path, whether what people called spirituality could be just an illusion. This is normal. However, if your conviction is strong, you will keep going. You don’t have to be finatic about it. You just have to pay attention to your surroundings and be ‘aware’. You continue to live you life and let nature takes its course. When the time is right, the answers will come.
Image from the internet

Spirituality exists wherever we struggle with the issue of how our lives fit into the greater cosmic scheme of things. This is true even when our questions never give way to specific answers or give rise to specific practices such as prayer or meditation. We encounter spiritual issues every time we wonder where the universe comes from, why we are here, or what happens when we die. We also become spiritual when we become moved by values such as beauty, love, or creativity that seem to reveal a meaning or power beyond our visible world. An idea or practice is ‘spiritual’ when it reveals our personal desire to establish a felt-relationship with the deepest meanings or powers governing life. - Robert C. Fuller

Theology is never any help; it is searching in a dark cellar at midnight for a black cat that isn’t there. Theologians can persuade themselves of anything. - Robert Heinlein

We do not "come into" this world; we come out of it, as leaves from a tree. As the ocean "waves," the universe "peoples." Every individual is an expression of the whole realm of nature, a unique action of the total universe. This fact is rarely, if ever, experienced by most individuals. Even those who know it to be true in theory do not sense or feel it, but continue to be aware of themselves as isolated "egos" inside bags of skin. - Alan Watts
